This study shows that the complex environmental exposures shaping host-associated microbiome composition can be summarized by variation along just a handful of effective axes, or dimensions, using a joint species distribution model to infer that dimensionality directly from microbial abundance data. This low dimensionality is tied to differences in environmental complexity, competition, diversity, and ecological strategy across microbiomes, and can be explained by correlated variation in resources like dietary nutrients combined with metabolic trade-offs within individual microbial species. The framework also revealed a strong signature of diet complexity and health status, offering a new ecological lens for understanding gut microbiome dysbiosis, and gives a quantitative bridge between statistical-physics models of microbiomes and long-standing niche theory in macroecology.

BiomEdit has been issued several patents over the past four years, including two recent U.S. patents: “Genetically Modified Lactobacillus and Uses Thereof” (U.S. Patent 12,599,637) and “Probiotic Compositions Comprising Lactobacillus reuteri Strains and Methods of Use” (U.S. Patent 12,427,174). Each establishes protection for engineered Lactobacillus reuteri strains, including composition of matter and methods of use, and systems used to deliver biologically active molecules directly within the host. These patents are part of our Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform.
