BiomEdit creates Programmable Veterinary Biologics™, living biologics built from strains delivering payloads designed to prevent and treat disease across species, including poultry, livestock, and companion animals. With the acquisition of Folium Science, the platform also includes CRISPR-based Guided Biotics technology that selectively targets specific bacterial populations within the microbiome.
Together, these technologies offer a new approach to animal health: engineering beneficial bacteria to deliver specific biological functions, and selectively targeting bacteria already present in the microbiome. Both approaches are designed to address specific disease mechanisms while fitting within established animal health and production practices.
Our mission is to engineer living biologics to prevent disease, treat conditions, and improve animal health. In practice, that means we combine strain engineering, computational biology, and our proprietary microbial strain library to build a repeatable engine for animal health products.
BiomEdit is backed by leading global investors including Anterra Capital, Viking Global Investors, Nutreco, AgriZeroNZ, Elevate Ventures, Betagro Ventures and others. We are engineering a new chapter in animal health through our Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform. Our backers are listed on our Investor & Partners page.
BiomEdit launched in April 2022 as a carve out of Elanco Animal Health, founded by CEO Aaron Schacht with members of Elanco’s former microbiome R&D team. We are headquartered at the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) at 16 Tech Innovation District in Indianapolis, giving our team access to state-of-the-art lab space and a broader life sciences network.
BiomEdit’s mission is to engineer living biologics that prevent disease, treat conditions, and improve animal health. Our vision is to transform animal health by creating programmable biologic solutions that advance care and well-being.
BiomEdit’s Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform spans three focus areas, infectious disease, sustainability, and chronic disease, and every program moves through a defined five-stage lifecycle: Data-Driven Species & Chassis Matching, Strain Engineering & Payload Design, High-throughput Sequencing and Computational Biology, Regulatory Navigation & Product Development, and Seamless Veterinary & Producer Integration. This lifecycle draws on a proprietary microbial strain library that provides a discovery foundation competitors can’t easily replicate.
BiomEdit’s product pipeline spans infectious disease, sustainability, and chronic disease programs from our Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform. Our leading product is CPerf LLV*, a first-of-its-kind engineered bacterial biologic for poultry that has received conditional USDA licensure. Our pipeline of products includes:
BiomEdit’s Probiotic Vectored Antibody (pvAb) is a specific delivery mechanism within our Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform, where engineered probiotic strains secrete antibody fragments directly in the gut to combat disease and protect animals. We use pvAb technology in CPerf LLV*, BE-118, BE-122, and BE-117.
BiomEdit created CPerf LLV*, the first engineered bacterial biologic from our Programmable Veterinary Biologics platform to achieve USDA conditional licensure in poultry. It’s a first-in-class engineered probiotic for chickens that secretes nanobodies against Clostridium perfringens toxins in the broiler gut, reducing the impact of necrotic enteritis without antibiotics. CPerf LLV* has been shown to reduce NE-associated mortality and supports flock performance. It will be marketed as Optavant in the US when the full license is issued for the product.
BiomEdit holds foundational patents protecting our engineered probiotic delivery platform, including “Genetically Modified Lactobacillus and Uses Thereof” (U.S. Patent 12,599,637) and “Probiotic Compositions Comprising Lactobacillus reuteri Strains and Methods of Use” (U.S. Patent 12,427,174), issued April 2026. These patents cover the engineered Lactobacillus reuteri strains and delivery systems underlying CPerf LLV* and future pipeline products.
BiomEdit’s platform addresses poultry, swine, cattle, dogs, and cats, spanning infectious disease, sustainability, and chronic disease programs.
BiomEdit brings together scientists, engineers, product developers, and regulatory experts who have worked through setbacks and breakthroughs together across careers at the intersection of biology and commercial animal health. That combination of backgrounds, and a shared mission in animal health, is part of what makes this platform possible. Collectively, we have over 450 peer-reviewed publications, 20 doctoral degrees, 10 patents, and over 200 years of combined leadership experience in animal health, led by CEO Aaron Schacht.
BiomEdit hires periodically for leadership, research, development, regulatory, and operational roles as our pipeline advances, in keeping with our commitment to attract exceptional teammates who share our mission in animal health. Recent openings have included research scientist, microbiologist, and internship roles in strain engineering and synthetic biology. Current openings will be posted on BiomEdit’s LinkedIn company page.
